Mitten Crabs

Research Questions: Are invasive mitten crabs established in the Gulf of Maine? Will they be in the future?

Why this matters

Mitten crabs can travel hundreds of miles from the coast into lakes and streams. To catch these crabs before they spread across the watershed, we need your help.

Mitten Crabs

Mitten crabs can spread quickly when introduced to a new area. Research suggests these crabs do not reproduce well in cold climates and have yet to be found in the Gulf of Maine watershed. They have been found in bays, rivers, and streams as close as New York and Connecticut. As the climate warms, will they move into our region? Scientists across New England want your help monitoring the Gulf of Maine watershed for early signs of mitten crabs.

Contribute to our project in the fall and spring when mitten crabs migrate between coastal and freshwater areas. Check for burrows in the muddy banks of streams and rivers, where these crabs make their home.
