Mussel Bed Mapping

Protocol Overview

  • Find a date, time, and place to collect your data
    • Select a rocky intertidal area or mudflat as your field site
    • Choose a date and time to collect data that is within one hour of low tide
    • Determine whether or not there are mussel beds or individual mussels at your field site
  • Take up to 5 photos of your field site
    • At least one photo showing the entire field site area
    • Any additional photos of individual mussels or predators you see
  • OPTIONAL: Complete the advanced protocol section
  • Once you are in a safe location with wifi or cellular data access, visit investigate.gmri.org/mussel_map to contribute your data:
    • Click on the Contribute tab to document your observations and upload your photos.
    • Click on View Data to see your and other observations
